I'm from Washington State, but now I've gone and fallen in love with Oregon! Who figured?
It all started when I decided to spend some time RV'ing in Central Oregon. I'd heard a lot about Bend and the surrounding area, but I'd always figured it would be similar to my home state. Not so! It turns out that Oregon has a ton to offered that you can't find anywhere else.
The first thing I decided was that I needed to have a base of operations. I found this wonderful RV park on the Internet: Newberry RV Park. (NewberryRV.com) It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. It's located in La Pine, Oregon, which is right south of Sunriver, quite close to Bend and smack in the middle of some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pacific Northwest.
This picture doesn't quite do it justice. It's a smallish park, but very clean and well maintained. The facilities are first rate and the cost is quite reasonable. I even hear they will be offering free breakfast snacks for the 2010 season. I guess I need to go back again!
I started easy. No need to overdo it when you're on vacation, right? I spent the first few days driving around Bend and the area to the east. That's where Mt. Bachelor is located. I hear it's highly sought after for winter skiing, but I can tell you that it's also very nice in the summer. Check out how beautiful it is:
For some hands on activities with nature, there are all kinds of awesome hikes, climbs, lakes, and rivers to experience. I sampled many of these, in fact. Here's what the waterways look like while canoeing in the Sunriver area, just south of Bend. So nice and so relaxing!
For a day trip, I highly recommend visiting Crater Lake National Park. It's a can't miss. I really feel it's one of the nature wonders of the world. The water is so incredibly deep blue and serene. You have to see it for yourself. It's an easy day trip back and forth from Newberry RV Park.
And let's not forget the many wonderful golf courses in Central Oregon. Sometimes it's difficult to decide whether to pick up the clubs or just go hiking through the surrounding woods. Incredible.
This is just a small sample of what Central Oregon has to offer. I highly recommend a visit, and I highly recommend Newberry RV Park as a great place to stay at a very reasonable cost.
Well, I am a bit camera shy, I suppose. Don't let this picture stop you :-)
Have fun!
JAK
P.S. By the way, Yes, I just found out that they will offer free breakfast in 2010.
